October is Vegetarian Awareness Month: Go Meatless!

When we think of October, we often think of sweater weather, pumpkin everything and breast cancer awareness month. But did you know October is also Vegetarian Awareness Month?

The month kicks off with World Vegetarian Day on October 1 and concludes with World Vegan Day on November 1.  Here are just a few reasons to go meat free for Vegetarian Awareness Month:

Eat well, feel well
There are countless studies about the heath benefits of consuming less or no meat and having a diet high in fruits, vegetables, nuts and beans. Meat-free diets are also associated with lowering caner risk, heart disease and obesity.

Shrink your carbon footprint
It’s no secret transporting meat is costly. Without going too far into the nitty-gritty details, reducing the amount of meat we eat can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, energy and water consumption. Take advantage of the fall farmers markets in your area by purchasing local produce that has been growing all summer. Eating seasonally is huge when it comes to supporting your neighboring farmers and the economy.

Change it up
It’s easy to get stuck in a rut when it comes to your go-to weekly meals. Use a meatless October as an excuse to scour Pinterest to find new recipes and ideas, being a vegetarian is much more than constant salads. Embrace your inner foodie and branch out— let this be your encouragement to try something you have never eaten before like Sesame Crusted Tofu.

Pennies for your protein

Okay, maybe not pennies exactly, but the expense of meat, poultry and fish can add up, especially if you’re being health conscious about the meat you consume and are purchasing quality cuts. Lentil, beans and tofu are inexpensive vegetarian options that can replace the chicken in your salad or the beef in your burrito and cost significantly less.

If going meatless for the entire month feels daunting, try incorporating a few meatless meals into your weekly routine or commit to a “Meatless Monday.” Here are a few more of our favorite meatless recipes:

Vegetarian Goat Cheese Wrap
