5 Exercises To Boost Memory Potential

Memory is vitally important for humans to function in society and lead healthy and productive lives. As we age, memory tends to decrease and illnesses such as Alzeihmer's which wreak havoc on the brain can begin to take hold. Practicing these mental exercises every day may not stave age-related memory loss, but it can help your brain keep connections open and process to the best of its ability.

My grandfather lived to be 99 years old, and was sharp as a tack through his final days. He employed many of these exercises to keep his mind sharp while many of his friends suffered from debilitating memory loss. Hours a day of online strategy games like checkers and solitaire as well as crossword puzzles and writing a family history book kept his mind and body from idleness. That's not to say that memory exercises can cure a person predisposed to those illnesses, but one can minimize age-related forgetfulness by emplioying some of these tips.

Use Your Opposite Hand
Are you right-handed? You probably instinctively use your right hand for everything from combing your hair to opening the car door. Switch to using your left hand for some of these tasks to exercise a new part of your brain. Challenging your brain will create new brain cells and pathways.

Commit to Memorizing
With modern technology, it's so easy to remember all of your birthdays and appointments on a calendar and program all the phone numbers you need. But, remembering some of these things will help stretch your brain's learning potential. Only use technology as a backup, not as you rmeans to remember everything or you'll be selling yourself short.

Learn Something New
Is there a hobby that you have always wanted to try? While it may be challenging to learn a new instrument or speak a new language, fresh challenges help your brain expand its inventory. While it may seem like an endless challenge for you, your brain cells will be lighting up with the flurry of figuring out how to process a new activity.

Solve Puzzles
Challenge yourself every day with a puzzle, be it the crossword of the day, sudoku, or a wordsearch. Cognitive exercises are vitally important to the health of your brain.

Use Acronyms and Break Up Information
When memorizing seems challenging, don't give up! Use new strategies for committing information to memory. Being a non-musical person, learning about music notes was especially challenging for me. When learning the treble clef, my teacher taught me the acronyms Every Good Boy Does Fine for the lines and FACE (face) for the spaces. Now, even a decade later I will never forget how to label a sheet of music!

For challenging information like license plates, break up the numbers into groups of twos or threes and work on memorizing a piece at a time, until you can string it together!
