The Top 5 Do’s and Don’ts of Fake Tanning PDF Print E-mail

While fake tanning comes without the health risks of traditional tanning, it does have some risks of its own.  What if I turn bright orange?  What if I get streaky?  What if it washes off?  These are some of the questions you may be asking yourself prior to a self-tanning session.  Thankfully, Fit&FabLiving is here to teach you how to get the realistic, golden tan you’re looking for- without the mishaps!

DO figure out what kind of fake tan is right for you.

There are a number of ways to get a fake tan.  There are at-home treatments, as well as professional salon treatments.  If you prefer to do an at-home treatment, you can purchase self-tanning lotions or sprays.  These options are more affordable than professional treatments, but unless you know exactly what you’re doing, they could end with you looking like an orange mess.  Professional spray tans are a more expensive but less risky choice.  Figure out which kind of self-tanning method is best for your needs and budget.

DON’T go ten shades darker.
If you want a natural-looking tan, going from ghost white to Jersey Shore is not the way to do it.  Start by picking a shade only a shade or two darker than your natural skin color. You can always build on it later if you decide it’s not dark enough.

DO prep your skin properly.
Prior to fake tanning, it is important to exfoliate your body to rid it of dead skin cells.  Jump in the shower, give yourself a good wash, and lightly slough off the dead skin, especially in problem areas such as elbows and knees.  If you skip this step, dry skin can flake off afterward, taking your beautiful tan with it!  Moisturizing your body for a few days before the treatment is also important for the same reasons.  Do not moisturize on the day of your treatment, however. Last, but not least, don’t forget to shave your legs and underarms!

DON’T forget spots.
If you’re applying a tanning lotion or spray to your body, as opposed to receiving a professional spray tan, you may forget to cover certain areas of your body.  Your ears, the space between your toes, and your underarms can often be forgotten, so make sure to pay attention to them!  Also, do your best to ensure that your entire body is receiving an even layer of fake tan lotion or spray; don’t favor some areas over others.

DO make it last.
After self-tanning, there are many things you need to do (or avoid doing) if you want to make your tan last.  Do not shower, moisturize, or exfoliate for at least 8 hours after the treatment.  Even sweating can smear or fade your tan, so do your best to stay cool!  Make sure to wear loose clothing that won’t rub your tan or leave lines on your skin.
