How to Clean Makeup Brushes Not to gross you out, but makeup brushes can be a harbor for bacteria. Makeup residue, body oil and dead skin can all become trapped in the bristles, which can cause breakouts and shorten the lifespan of your brushes. To save your skin and make your brushes last as long as possible, follow this tutorial on how to clean them from our editor Allison.

How often should I clean my brushes? Clean them at least once a week in order to prevent buildup of nasty bacteria.

What should I clean them with? Baby shampoo or any mild shampoo or dish soap works great.

Step 1: Wet bristles under warm water. Make sure the bristles are pointing downward. You don’t want water getting into the handle. It can loosen the glue that holds the brush together.

Step 2: Put a drop of shampoo or soap in your palm and gently swirl the brush until it lathers. Gentleness is key, you do not want to distort the shape of your brush!

Step 3: Rinse thoroughly. Make sure there isn’t any soap residue left.

Step 4: Blot brushes dry on a towel. Again, do this gently to avoid misshapen bristles.

Step 5: Lay brush to dry on its side on a towel. I generally let mine dry overnight.
