Looking for a change as the season ends? You’re not the only one. When the weather starts getting warmer or colder, women everywhere see that as a time to alter their hairstyles. But before you ask for a drastic cut, think things through. A certain haircut might not be as flattering, especially if it doesn’t fit right with your face shape. To determine your face shape, pull your hair up with one hand. Then look into a mirror and trace the outline of your face on the glass with lipstick. You should fall into of these categories: oval, square, round or heart. Here are some dos and don’ts for each.
Oval: Your shape is slightly narrower at the jaw line than at the temples, with a rounded hairline.
Who Has It – Jennifer Aniston, Tyra Banks and Cameron Diaz
What Works – Almost every hairstyle looks great on this shape. You can wear your hair short, medium or long, but it looks best when your hair is pushed off your face. Since you can pretty much do whatever you please, decide what your favorite facial quality is and find the best style to flaunt it. Suggestions include chic bobs, side-swept bangs or long waves.
Skip This – Heavy bangs and short layers.
Square: Your shape is dominated by a strong, square jaw line and usually a square hairline as well.
Who Has It – Rosario Dawson, Janet Jackson and Angelina Jolie
What Works – This shape is pretty angular, so you look should be softening, not equally rigid. Short/medium lengths are your best bet, with waves around the face. Feathery bangs and side parts also soften your look. Since your face has straight features, opt for waves as opposed to equally straight hair. However, if straight is your thing, add long layers.
Skip This – Long straight styles, including straight bangs.
Round: Your face shape is fuller than the rest. The chin and hair line are rounded, and the widest point is at the cheeks.
Who Has It – Drew Barrymore, Kate Bosworth and Oprah Winfrey
What Works – Try a short hair style, a little longer than chin length. Add some face-framing layers to make your face look longer. Side-swept or even choppy bags are also a favorite. You can also brush your part so that it lands on the side.
Skip This – One-length looks, blunt cuts are out. So are short, curly styles.
Heart: Your shape is wide at the temples and hairline, and has a narrow, small chin.
Who Has It – Reese Witherspoon, Jennifer Lopez and Naomi Campbell
What Works – Longer styles, or ones that end at the chin are favorites for this shape. If you want a long look, try adding longer layers too. If you want shorter hair, keep your top layers long as well. You can even try a chin-length bob.
Skip This – Choppy layers, short/blunt bangs and short styles that are ultra full.
