Hair Color 101 for Mature Women PDF Print E-mail
As we get older, we discover the styles and cuts that best flatter our face and work best with our lifestyle. When you get that trim, don't neglect considering your color. Hair color can cover gray, freshen up your overall look and flatter you more if you consider age and hair color. Read on to find out what you need to know about hair color for mature women and why your hair isn't and shouldn't be the color it was when you were 20!

You likely go in for a trim every month to two months, but you may be neglecting the shade of your hair. It's important that we accept and celebrate the changes age brings, and one of them is a change in our hair.

Shade

It's more than likely that you can't pull off that longer black style anymore, nor can you get away with hair colors that are better-suited for young co-eds (never try an unnatural shade- it rarely looks good on young women, let alone mature women). Embrace a shade that isn't far off from your natural color but that has depth and character to it. If you are closer to blonde, opt for a honey hue instead of red. Red accentuates blotchiness in the skin and can too harsh on mature skin tones. At a salon, you can opt for a warm tone or a cool tone. These tones from gold to ash, giving you the option of a bright tone or a subdued one.

Salon or At-Home?

A semipermanent tint can be used to enhance your natural color and will also cover any grays. If you are opting for a permanent shade out of the box, testing is important. The color on the front of the box or even the results that are indicated on the side aren't always going to be what your hair will look like given its pigment, amount of grays and the overall changes that develop as you age. Products that use the term 'natural match' are often great for accelerating your natural color. Your best bet for a good base is a salon visit, followed by maintaining your roots at home. A salon professional can give you the best advice about how to take care of your new color and how to keep it looking fresh and natural. Two shades lighter than your current natural color is often the rule followed by salon pros!

Conditioning

To avoid dry or frizzy hair, use a deep conditioner daily. Don't be afraid of using it, because it will keep brittle hair smooth and shiny. Opt for a hydrating product and use a hot oil treatment like Alberto V05 once or twice a week. Fekkai and Organix also make great shea butter conditioning products. Any type of hair-healing mask is ideal to prevent future breakage. As you age, your hair isn't what it used to be, and it's important to treat it well. Avoid using too many products or heat. Set your hairdryer to the medium setting and avoid daily straightening.
