The word 'fat,' in food terms, often incites panic. Unfortunately, fat has been designated an 'evil' food that causes bellies to bloat and arms to jiggle. Because of this, many people try to rid their diet of all fatty foods. But the truth is that eating fat will not automatically make you fat. While there is some truth to the statement, it's important to clear the air about this widely misrepresented nutrient that is actually an essential part of a healthy diet. Here's what you need to know about fat and why you should learn to love it...seriously! There are numerous types of fats:
In short, both saturated and trans fat are the "bad" fats, or the ones that will contribute to heart disease and other health problems, because the body cannot easily convert this fat to usable energy. Foods high in these fats are typically packaged or processed foods, bacon, sausage, butter, shortening, cheese and cream. But the good news is that there are fats that your body needs - fats that will actually promote heart health, optimize brain and cellular functions and improve bone and joint health. Both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are considered "good" fats. These fats are a great fuel source for the body and help protect tissues from damage. Some good fat foods to eat are avocado, fish, leafy greens, olive oil and nuts and seeds (including nut butters like peanut and almond butter). The nutrition labels may look scary, but most of the fat in these foods are healthy fats that will help improve your body's overall health. While it's important to get enough healthy fats in your diet, the body can only process a limited amount of fat, so eat all fats in moderation.
