7 Cheeses to Add to Your Grocery List! PDF Print E-mail

You can still 'say cheese!', and eat it too, if you're on a diet! Just don't over-indulge and you'll still be able to lose that bit of pudge. While cheese can be filled with fats, some varieties are also good sources of protein, calcium and phosphorus. But that doesn’t mean you can chow down on a four-cheese ravioli or a cheesy pizza. Rather than making cheese the main ingredient in a dish, use it as a garnish or a small snack. Keep reading for the top cheeses you should stick to.

1. Sargento Deli Style Swiss – These slices are full of flavor and are made for sandwiches. With only 70 calories per slice, it’s alright to have 1-2 in your meal. Plus, each slice also has 5 grams of protein. That's a major energy boost.

2. Laughing Cow Light Cheese – Each wedge of this creamy cheese only has 35 calories, and there’s enough of it to spread over a bagel thin of a piece of toast. The main flavor Laughing Cow offers is its Light Creamy Swiss, but it just also came out with three new flavors: Light Blue Cheese, Light Mozzarella, Sun-Dried Tomato & Basil and Light Queso Fresco & Chipotle.

3. Low Fat Cottage Cheese – Dieters love this yummy snack and aren’t afraid to add it to their daily menus for one good reason. Cottage cheese is filled with protein and is sure to satisfy your tummy. Opt for low-fat versions that have about 100 calories and more than 8 grams of protein.

4. Kraft’s Philadelphia Light Cream Cheese – It’s hard for many of us to imagine having a bagel without a cream cheese topping. Unfortunately, cream cheese is overloaded with calories and fat. That’s why Kraft decided to make its own delicious light cream cheese. Though it’s not as thick or rich as its fattier counterpart, it’s still really tasty.

5. Feta Cheese – This low-fat cheese has been part of the Mediterranean Diet for hundreds of years because it’s delicious and filling. Plus, it’s lower in calories than most other cheese and you can use it in a main meal, breakfast or just sprinkle it on your favorite salad.

6. Cabot Cheese's Reduced Fat Varieties – We’re often told that if we’re on a diet and we see an orange, or dark yellow cheese, we should just turn away. But Cabot makes many varieties of cheese that you can still eat without destroying your weight loss dreams. Just remember, moderation is key. We recommend the 75% Reduced Fat Sharp Cheese and the 50% Reduced Fat Pepper Jack.

7. A Little Bit of Any Cheese – In moderation, you can pretty much nibble on anything. Here are a couple healthy dishes that just have a bit of cheese in them: Easy Cottage Cheese Pancakes for breakfast and Greek Style Macaroni and Cheese for lunch/dinner.
