While we’re still not completely sold on the fact that organic food is better for you, we do know that people all over the United States continue to buy it, despite its higher price. So what does organic really mean? If a food is labeled as organic, then any feed or fertilizer that has been used is of plant or animal origin, and doesn't use any chemicals, growth stimulants, chemical fertilizers, or pesticides.
Not every fruit or vegetable that you buy needs to be organic, but there are 8 that we do think should be purchased as organic, or even better, grown yourself.
1. Apples – With around 5 grams of fiber in each fruit, apples will fill you up without packing you down with calories. Some studies have also shown that apples can help lower cholesterol, manage diabetes and prevent several diseases, including cancer.
2. Carrots - Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, and they can actually help reduce your risk of a variety of cancers, including lung, throat and bladder. Eating this veggie is also a quick way to get your daily dosage of vitamin A.
3. Strawberries – Not only do these super fruits pack a high punch of vitamin C, they’re also rich in phytochemicals and flavonoids that have been associated with cancer-fighting powers. Plus, they’re so delicious!
4. Spinach – One of the most powerful greens out there, spinach is a superb source of folate and vitamin B, which can help prevent dementia and heart disease. High in vitamin K, this important vegetable also helps build strong muscles.
5. Tomatoes – Is it a fruit or vegetable? We don’t think it matters because no matter what, a tomato will always be a superfood. Tomatoes contain lycopene, the antioxidant phytochemical that helps prevent heart disease, and they're a good source of vitamins A, C and E.
6. Blueberries – They may be small, but they’re super in every way possible. Blueberries contain tons of powerful antioxidants, beta-carotene, lutein, potassium and fiber. Told you they were good for you!
7. Celery – It’s a fabulous snack when you’re craving a crunch, and a healthy one too! Celery contains vitamin C, which helps keep your immune system in tip-top shape, and fiber, which can keep you full longer. That’s part of the reason why we think celery is the perfect snack food!
8. Peaches – This fruit is a popular post-workout snack, and we understand why. Peaches contain potassium, a mineral necessary for regulating fluid and electrolyte levels. They’re also high in fiber, vitamin C and beta-carotene.
