Coconut Water: Why the Hype? PDF Print E-mail
I think in the last week I've heard about the miracles of coconut water at least 5 separate times: from my friends and in my favorite magazines. We're here to put the information together and decide if coconut water is actually a healthy and valuable substance.

What is it? Coconut water is the clear liquid that is found inside coconuts. Young coconuts do not have as much flesh inside, and therefore have the most coconut water. As coconuts age, more flesh develops and there is less water inside.

How did it gain popularity?
Coconut water has long been popular in Latin American countries and areas where coconuts are grown. Young coconuts are taken from trees, and sold to passerby on beaches and highways. When I was in the Dominican Republic, we bought a coconut one day and the salesman cut it freshly for us to drink. Now, because it can be bottled and packaged, it has gained more popularity elsewhere in the world.

Why the craze? Coconut water is high in Potassium and minerals, and is very popular among athletes looking for a more natural alternative to commercialized sports drinks. Coconut water is also free of fats and cholesterol, making it appealing for all drinkers.

Coconut water is also said to be the the cure for a hangover, because it quickly revives the body from a late night out. It can make people feel better at almost any time because of its natural goodness.
