When ballet began in the 1600s, dancers most likely wore their hair pinned high on their heads to keep it out of their face. Fast forward 400 years and the ballet bun is a popular updo that has been adopted by stylish women everywhere. Not only is it a super easy hairstyle, but there are various ways to put your own spin on it. Here are our 5 favorites.
1. Multiple Buns Pull hair back into 3 ponytails. Twist each ponytail into a bun and secure with bobby pins. This would be a great look to try horizontally or vertically. Check out the step-by-step guide on Refinery 29. 2. The Twisted Bun Twist random strands of hair and pull them back into your bun. We like achieving this look by parting hair on the side and twisting the hair in the front of the face. We love this bun captured by street style photographer Craig Arend. 3. The Bejeweled Bun Accessorize your updo by adding a studded or colorful hair clip above or next to your bun. Emma Stone wore this look to the premier of Spiderman. 4. The Sock Bun If you've got an old (and clean) sock, you can create this voluminous bun. Follow our step-by-step video tutorial. 5. Braided up the Back Bun Flip your head upside down and French braid the back of your hair. Now you've got two hair styles in one, a cool braid and a bun. Blogger Kayley Heeringa shows you how to do it in this video tutorial.
