People with small, stubborn pockets of fat around the hips, thighs, waist and neck have a less-invasive option to the traditional liposuction to eliminate unwanted fat. Instead of inserting a cannula into the body to break up and take out fat, as is done in liposuction surgery, a procedure called external ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty or external liposuction targets and emulsifies fatty areas from the outside with no cuts, pain or serious side effects. 'Patient satisfaction is high because there are visible results with much less discomfort and trauma to the body,' said dermatologist Dr. David Sire of Fullerton, a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology. 'Cannulas are not used with external ultrasonic liposuction, so there are no scars and less bruising, swelling, and recovery time for the patient.'
