Tickled Pink with Spring Nail Polish

Tickled Pink with Spring Nail Polish

Nail polish: love the way it looks and hate the way it cracks, but it is a time-honored beauty essential. This spring, brands such as OPI and Essie have released shades reminiscent of pastel and vibrant-colored flowers (with a little glitter thrown into the mix).

Essie’s Spring 2013 collection features a couple pinks including one vibrant color called “Madison ave-hue.” They also have lavender, an aqua blue, muted minty green and bright red shades. The Resort 2013 collection features very similar (though slightly more vibrant) shades of blue, red, green and lavender.

OPI has taken a different approach to springtime color focusing deeper hues. Blues and purples take center stage for their Euro Centrale Spring collection. Shimmery “liquid sand” polishes in purples, deep reds and blues such as “Get Your Number” come from the Mariah Carey collection. The liquid sand polishes dry almost matte with a bit of grainy texture. Finally this spring, OPI has a vibrant blend of pinks, yellows, purples and blues for their Nicole by OPI Selena Gomez collection.

While these colors are exciting and playful, keep in mind that each shade varies only slightly from the next. It is easy to find a lower budget option with a near perfectly matching color from other companies.

For example, Essie’s “Madison ave-hue” pink mentioned above has a cousin color from New York Color (N.Y.C.) called “Uptown,” which is a fast drying polish at a fraction of the cost. The colors are not identical, but both would look beautiful with a spring outfit begging for a splash of pink.

Wet n Wild also has a cousin color to OPI’s “Get Your Number” blue called “Bijou Blue” at a much lower price. OPI's color will give a matte finish while Wet N Wild’s will dry shiny. However, both blues will give you a vibrant twist on the traditional pastel colors of spring.
