Low-Fat Cinnamon Rolls

These delicious cinnamon rolls always serve as an amazing holiday brunch dish! Surprise your guests with this wonderful choice. This adapted recipe uses mashed bananas for a sweet and low-fat filling.

  • For the dough:
  • 2 cups whole-wheat pastry flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon agave nectar
  • For the filling:
  • 1 ripe banana, mashed
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • For the icing:
  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 1-3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract


  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the pastry flour, baking powder, salt, milk, and agave nectar until well mixed.
  3. Once the dough forms, roll out on a generously floured flat surface with a rolling pin.
  4. Next, combine the filling ingredients in a small bowl and evenly brush the filling out on the cinnamon roll dough.
  5. Cut the dough into into thick horizontal pieces and roll up to form the pastry. Place in a buttered and floured cast iron skillet and bake the rolls for 10-12 minutes.
  6. To make the icing, combine the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract in a small bowl and evenly pour over the warm cinnamon rolls.
  7. Serve immediately
