It seems that everywhere we look lately someone is flashing the latest style, color or pattern on their nails. Whether it’s glitter, magnetic or just extraordinarily well coordinated, they always look fabulous. But the ladies we truly admire are of a dying breed: the nail artist. Colorful flowers, spirals and penguins may look adorable on our nails but who wants to drop $50 on an expensive kit of nail art tools? Luckily for aspiring nail artists, most nail art tools are easy enough to make at home! Read below to find out how to create your own tools to become a master nail artist and to see our favorite designs!
Small Dotting Tool: For small, fine detailed dotting there are a number of different tools you can use. Try a toothpick or sharp pencil first. A dried out ballpoint pen with a thin tip will work too. If all else fails, try a bobby pin, but those are not ideal because they make larger dots than the other tools.
Big Dotting Tool: The head of a large straight pin works ver well as a large dotting tool. Press the needle of the pin into the rubber eraser at the end of a pencil (perhaps the pencil you use as a small dotting tool?) to give yourself a tool to grip for the fine detail work. If you don’t have a pin available, try a blunt pencil in its place.
Striping Brush: To make thin, delicate stripes on your nails, cut a paintbrush down to size. Select a paintbrush with bristles an inch long, and use a small pair of scissors to cut the outer bristles of the brush away until you have a brush about 2 mm wide. It may seem very thin, but it will work perfectly for detailed nail art!
Detailing Brush: The detailing brush is similar to the striping brush, but with shorter bristles. This thin, short bristled brush is necessary for any curvin lines that are a part of the nail art design. Select a paintbrush with bristles a half inch long anduse the striping brush technique to trim the bristles to 1 or 2 mm wide.
With these four homemade tools, all sorts of nail art designs are possible! Here are just a few of our favorites this summer:
