There is such a thing as a mature or grown-up ponytail. Celebrities have shown us that you can still pull off a fashionable and sophisticated look when wearing a ponytail. Here’s how!
The main things to remember are getting the right height for the ponytail, adding root lift at the crown, and creating softness with loose tendrils. You’ll need a good tailcomb; a small-barrel curling iron if you have straight hair; a clear band or one that matches your hair color; and hairspray.
Start by curling your hair to create waves if you have straight hair. If you already have naturally wavy hair, then you can skip this step. Use your fingers to comb through the waves to loosen them. Lightly tease your hair at the crown using a fine-toothed comb on a three-inch section of hair behind the top of your head.
Use a tailcomb (or a brush works just fine, too) to gather your hair into a ponytail. Position the ponytail between the nape of your neck and the crown of your head. (You may pull out some strands around your face for a flattering frame.) Secure your hair with the elastic band. For a more sophisticated finish, you can gather a thin section of hair from underneath the ponytail and wrap it around the band to cover it; secure the hair with a pin. Use hairspray to fix it.
