The Do’s and Don’ts of Wearing Red Lipstick

The Do’s and Don’ts of Wearing Red Lipstick

Kicking up your look can be as simple as sweeping a sexy shade of crimson across your lips, but there are a few things you need to know before you go red.  Here are the 7 rules of red lips that every woman needs to know.

DO find the right shade of red for you.
If only there was one shade of red in the world, life would be so easy.  Unfortunately for us women, we have to paw through rows and rows of different reds, from L’Oreal’s Divine Wine to Vincent Longo’s Carnelian Whisper.  There are orangey reds, pinky reds, and even cool bluish-reds, so which one should you choose?  Fair-skinned women should lean more toward true reds with no orangey tones, while medium-skinned women should go for pinky reds or orangey ones.  Dark-skinned women can go darker with their lips, sporting purpley, wine-colored hues.  Put a few different colors on your fingertips, hold them up next to your lips, and see which one works best for you.

DON’T wear it with just anything.
You don’t have to be walking the red carpet to wear a fiery hue on your lips, but make sure you are wearing clothes that complement your done-up look.  You can never go wrong with a little black dress or an evening gown, but you can also spice up your work attire with a subtle red tone.  Add some edge to your look by wearing jeans, heels, and a leather bomber jacket.  There are all kinds of looks that work with red lipstick- just skip the sweats when you’ve got a pretty pucker.

DO use lip liner.

Red lipstick can feather and bleed, making your pout look messy.  Use a lip liner before you apply any lipstick, and make sure you apply it right on your natural lip line.  Lining too far outside your lip line can result in a mouth that Bozo the Clown would be proud of.

DON’T get lipstick on your teeth.
There’s nothing worse than glancing in the mirror at the end of the night and realizing that you’ve had lipstick on your choppers for hours.  After applying your lipstick, try this trick.  Insert a clean finger into your mouth, close your lips around it, then pull the finger out.  You’ll get rid of the excess lipstick found on the inside of your lips this way.

DO use subtle shades on the rest of your face.
You’ve heard it time and time again: either emphasize your eyes or lips- never both.  Your lips will be bold, so going dark on any other part of your face will make you look overdone.  This doesn’t mean you should skip your eyes completely, though.  A couple coats of mascara and a subtle lid is the way to go.

DON’T be intimidated.
It may seem like there are so many rules just for wearing lipstick, but don’t worry about it!  Have fun, play around with colors and styles, and make your look your own.  You won’t believe how confident you’ll feel once you paint it on!  Red lipstick is empowering and makes you feel like the strong woman you are, so wear it fearlessly.

DO whiten your teeth.
Red lipstick can often make teeth look yellower than they actually are, so you might have to go the extra mile to avoid looking un-brushed.  Grab a whitening pen or some white strips and use them for a week or two before going red.
