JJ Virgin’s Top 7 Superfoods

JJ Virgin’s Top 7 Superfoods

One of the best healthy eating tips nutrition expert JJ Virgin gave us was that you should add more healthy food to your diet before you begin to take things away. To give us a taste of what she was talking about, JJ told us all about her top 7 superfoods! Make sure to add these to your cart the next time you are at the grocery store.

1. Greens

Deep green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale and collard greens, are packed with vitamins A and C, dietary fiber, iron and calcium. Some research has shown that diet rich in these healthy veggies can actually reduce your risk of cancer.

2. Berries

Berries contain tons of powerful antioxidants, which are good for protecting muscles from free radical damage in the same way that exercising protects muscles. So add some blueberries or strawberries to some yogurt for breakfast for some major healthy benefits.

3. Coconut

Eat more coconut. JJ Virgin says that coconut is the one food that surprises her clients most when she tells them they need to add it to their diet. Although coconut has a bad rep, JJ says that it’s full of good fats and it can help you stay full.

4. Avocado

Avocado is rich in mono-unsaturated fats, which raise HDL (healthy) cholesterol levels and help slow arterial aging. They also provide you with many different vitamins and minerals, but they act as nutrient boosters.

5. Flaxseed

Flaxseed has a long history of use in folk medicine to reduce pain, inflammation, and coughing, and to improve digestion. Adding 1/4-cup of ground flaxseed to your daily diet can lower blood cholesterol and have a leveling effect on blood sugar.

6. Cold Water Fish

Cold water fish, such as salmon and trout, are great for the heart! They also contain omega-3 fatty acids which can help lesson abdominal fat. Two other reasons to add cold water fish to your diet are that they are rich in vitamin D and high in calcium.

7. Pomegranates

Pomegranate is a real rock star food, according to JJ Virgin. She loves to add 2-4 oz. of fresh pomegranate juice into sparkling water. Other potential health benefits from drinking pomegranate juice are cancer prevention and lowering your cholesterol.
