Plain pretzels are boring, and surprisingly unhealthy! Why not try out this delicious recipe for a healthier alternative! They’re soft, chewy, and have a sweet kick! We like to serve it with honey mustard or some softened fat-free cream cheese. It’s delicious!

Ingredients:

2 1/4 teaspoons instant quick rise yeast

2 tablespoons honey

1 1/2 cups warm water 105 to 110 degrees F

2 1/4 cups whole wheat flour

2 1/4 cups white flour

1 teaspoon salt

2 tablespoons canola oil

1 tablespoon baking soda

1/4 cup egg substitute

  • 2 1/4 tsp. instant yeast
  • 2 tbsp. honey
  • 1 1/2 cup hot water (105 to 110 degrees)
  • 2 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 tbsp. oil
  • 1 tbsp. baking soda
  • 1/4 cup egg whites, whisked

Directions:

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Combine the yeast, honey, and water in a bowl. Stir and let be for 5 minutes. Combine flours, salt, and oil in the bowl of a stand mixer. Add the foamy yeast and mix on a low speed with the dough hook attachment. After 5 minutes, the dough should be pulling away from the bowl and hook easily. If it isn’t, add a little bit of flour to speed up the process. Once the dough is mixed, cover tightly with a kitchen towel and set in a warm place (on top of the oven works).

In the meantime, add the baking soda to a quart of water and simmer on the stove. Once it reaches a simmer, turn off the heat. Cut the dough into a dozen pieces and roll them into the desired shape. Then quicklly dip into the water and baking soda mixture and place on a parchment-lined cookie sheet. Repeat until all pretzels are done. Brush the tops with the egg whites and bake for 17 minutes or until golden brown.
