Easy on a Monday

If you choose one day next week to make an extra effort to relax, make it Monday. For certain people, the risk of stroke may be greater on Monday than on other days of the week, a recent study suggested. Researchers are not sure why. However, increased stress levels due to switching from easy Sundays to workday Mondays could be part of the picture. Make time on Mondays for deep breathing exercises and relaxing stretches.

Strokes occur when blood vessels that lead to the brain burst or become blocked, potentially leading to permanent disability. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. and contributes to more than 160,000 deaths per year. Having high blood pressure, heart or artery disease, diabetes, a blood clotting disorder, high cholesterol, or sickle cell disease increases your risk of stroke. Additional risk factors include tobacco use, inactivity, obesity, advanced age, male gender, African-American ethnicity, a family or personal history of stroke or heart attack, and excess consumption of alcohol. To help guard against stroke, eat a diet that is low in saturated fat and cholesterol, control your weight and blood pressure, exercise regularly, don't smoke, and keep stress levels in check. In a study, middle-aged people of below average socioeconomic status tended to have a higher risk of stroke on Mondays compared to other days, perhaps due to increased stress levels at the beginning of the work week.
