There is more to overall health than pounding the weights at the gym or jogging after work. There is also more to friendship than having people who can help out on moving day. Friendships that are developed over one’s lifetime are a vital part of health, both mental and physical. The reason that friends and friendships influence someone’s overall health is because without good friends, people tend to feel stress. This comes from the feeling of isolation that develops over time when one lacks good friends and friendships.

Of course, not all friendships are healthy. There is a reason that the term, healthy relationship, exists. Some friendships are one-sided, and exist for the sole purpose of one person using the other person for their own gain. Too often, a friendship can be destructive. This happens when one friend either bullies the other friend or pushes them in to making poor choices.

Friendships should create a healthy and growing emotional environment for both parties. When people have friends they can confide in, or rely on for support when other people turn against them, it eases the stress in one’s life. Because stress is considered one of the leading causes of premature death in adults, cultivating healthy friendships is vital for a rewarding life.
