Whether it’s the upcoming holiday season or next year’s wedding cycle, there’s always a need for a new dress. But if you’re like me – or most 20- or 30-something-year-olds, it’s likely your bank account can’t quite keep up with the constant need for dresses. And to make matters worse, more often than not, occasion dresses are usually worn just once, making it hard to justify the expense.
But there’s no reason we should sacrifice quality or the feeling of being perfectly done up for a special event. Sure, you can borrow dresses from similarly sized friends, but chances are, you’re all at the same weddings, bridal showers and parties and don’t want to duplicate looks. And that’s where Rent the Runway comes in.
Rent the Runway allows you to rent designer dresses, accessories and now even clothes, instead of forking up the big bucks for these high-price items. The site has tons of filter options – date, size, occasion, style and more – that make browsing and finding exactly what you’re looking for easy. If you don’t have a specific occasion in mind yet, you can use their “my hearts” function to essentially “like” and save dresses for the future. Dress rentals start at $30 and go up to $800, with thousands of options from brands like Shoshanna and kate spade new york, to Oscar de la Renta and Reem Acra.
You might be wondering what will happen if the dress doesn’t fit and your event is the next day. Well, Rent the Runway has you covered there. First off, their customer feedback on each dress is pretty amazing. Users are consistently uploading photos and details on their dress rentals, making it easy to visualize yourself in any given dress. Better yet, you can add a free backup size and a second style for $32.50. And if you don’t love your dress, there’s an awesome customer service team just a phone call away to help with exchanges and returns. Or if you happen to live or find yourself in NYC, Las Vegas, Chicago or Washington, D.C., you can head on over to the Rent the Runway store and try on dresses for rent in-person.
The hardest part of the process – which also happens to be the most fun – is actually picking out a dress or two. But once that’s all set, you just choose a delivery date and rent it for four to eight days. I usually aim to have it arrive a day or two before the event. And then when you’re done with it, you throw it in the prepaid mailer envelope and drop it off at a UPS store or drop box. No need to dry clean!
Love this concept so much that you want it on an ongoing basis? Subscribe to Rent the Runway’s unlimited subscription for $139 a month and you can select three items and hang onto them as long as you want. When you’re ready to send them back, you turn them in for three new items. This includes dresses, jackets, tops, accessories and more. There’s currently a wait list, so head over and add your name to it now.
Head over to RentTheRunway.com to start picking out your favorite dresses for upcoming festivities and think twice before you go out and buy a pricey dress you’ll only wear once.
